Steps to a Better Backyard

Step to a Better Backyard explores the possibilities of augmented reality (AR) within the editorial industry. This particular article, taken from Fine Gardening Magazine, is accompanied by both a full-spread illustration and an augmented reality experience. The AR component includes a 3d map with interactive moving assets. The idea is that readers can navigate and explore the "backyard" while reading the article. This project was created using Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Aero, and Blender.

Assets

Each asset was created and animated using Procreate. Later, they were turned into interactive AR components within the Adobe Aero App. While some assets were designed to play continuously, others were programmed to activate when tapped, hold for 5 seconds, and then continue playing until they return to their starting position.

Process

The illustrations were created in Procreate and the type was laid out using Adobe Indesign. Based on this layout, paths, or 2d shapes, were created using Adobe Illustrator. These paths were brought into Blender where they were extruded to various heights to build a 3d base for the final AR map. The color was applied and then the base was brought into the Adobe Aero app. There, assets were placed and programmed.
